Economic nationalism refers to the movement to assert greater Canadian economic sovereignty. Its roots can be identified in the protectionist National Policy of 1879 and its proponents stand opposed to the notion of free or unrestricted trade. In more recent years, economic nationalism has developed in response to high levels of foreign (particularly American) investment and control of the Canadian economy.
